Coffee
Some years ago (not too many) Andy Freeman who started Coffee Snobs (coffeesnobs.com.au) taught me to roast coffee by demonstration. Ever since then I have been buying green beans from his site and roasting them at home. Andy said to me "once you taste coffee that you roast yourself you will never go back to the retail stuff". And of course I haven't except for some notable exceptions which will appear here as well as chat about coffee roasting, sources and equipment. Your contributions will be added too.
Try out St Ali, Il Fornaioi, Liar Liar, Seven Seeds, Monk Bodi Dharma, Dukes for superb coffee made and roasted with respect, care and passion for the real thing.

Stuck in Sydney?
Desperate for a quality cup of coffee in Sydney? Just spent 5 days staying in Bondi and found myself searching for the real thing and finally found it at 101 Hall Street, Bondi. Started at the Icebergs on the Bondi Tamaramma walway and asked the barista (abov right) where I could get a great coffee. He sent me to Bondi Picnic in Hall Street. (pictured left).
Bondi Picnic is a cafe, restaurant with a dedicated approach to coffee making and by the way the food is great too. I only got as far as brunch but everything I did have was excellent. Try the scruffled eggs; eggs, truffles and smoked salmon.
You can have a single origin coffee or a blend made espresso or cold drip filtered. My favourite drink is doppio ristretto and I kept coming back for more, meeting friends over the three days left.
